States

While states cannot undo the protections afforded to citizens in the US Constitution or the protections or infringements from other federal laws, states clearly can do a lot. How do we know? We turn to the states themselves and identify 11 distinct safeguard areas where at least one state is active in protecting religious liberty.

On each state page linked below, you can view a summary of how that state measures up to the potential for protecting free exercise. That potential is defined by its 49 peers, namely, in what they are doing.

Additionally, each state page features a link to a one-page state scorecard useful to those who are curious about individual states, wish to compare a subset of states to each other, or seek an easy way to communicate more effectively about legal protections of religious liberty with their neighbors or elected officials
